Next month LACMA’s kid-friendly “spaghetti sculpture”—Jesús Rafael Soto’s Penetrable (1990)—will be packed up and returned to lender Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, who last year donated much of her collection to the Museum of Modern Art. (The Penetrable, so far as I can tell, is not part of the MoMA gift).
Meanwhile LACMA continues to bolster its permanent collection of Latin American abstraction. It has recently put on view Fanny Sanín’s Acrylic No. 13 (1970), a gift of the Colombian-born artist. The Sanín makes an interesting LA/LA comparative to the John McLaughlin show, being hard-edge abstraction in a different emotional register.
